“I build these women out of mirrors and glass, porcelain and brass, gold and silk, honey and milk. I create these alternate worlds where the women are vulnerable and sexual and objects and that’s just the way they want it…”
- Kukula

AFA Gallery of SoHo presents Haute Debutante, a solo exhibition of twelve new oil paintings plus ten drawings by Nataly “Kukula” Abramovitch.

Lithe nymphs lazily beckon the viewer in, lounging amongst strewn petticoats and parasols. Weaving together the languid allure of the Elizabethans with a dash of liberated 20’s sashay- Kukula’s muses are influenced by a cumulative feminine experience. Their fashions betray her obsession with couture, with culture, and her sublime talent for commingling the sensual with the austere. It is Kukula’s reverence to detail, color and form that renders her work a tapestry of opulence and her subjects quietly powerful, personified extensions of their finery.

The Haute Debutante is a woman in transformation. Each step outside and into society, involves a ritual of presentation. Consequently, the artist’s notion of “haute”, has double meaning - in that her debutante takes the art of dress seriously, yet is unbound by the claustrophobic mannerisms of the traditional cotillion. She is haute -“above”. Her knowledge and skill provide her a basis for creativity, and allow her to transcend the accepted conventions. The haute debutante aspires to create a world of her own.

Kukula (née Nataly Abramovitch) was born in a relatively isolated village about an hour north of Tel Aviv. After receiving her degree in illustration in 2003 from Vital-Shenkar in 2003, Kukula moved to the the US where she lives now.
