Julie Saul presents a solo exhibition in the project gallery of selected gouache paintings by Maira Kalman in conjunction with her curated show Maira Selects, an inaugural exhibition at the newly renovated Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Kalman’s two new books, My Favorite Things and Ah-Ha to Zig-Zag, based on the Cooper Hewitt show and collection, will be available at the opening for sale and signing.
As a narrative and pictorial exploration of significant objects chosen from the Cooper Hewitt’s collection, Kalman brings together objects such as teapots, illustrated books, porcelain figures of ballet dancers and President Abraham Lincoln’s gold pocket watch. Kalman is best known for her distinctive take on modern life. Here, she explores the human condition, presenting objects that create a picture of daily life as she sees it and lives it. The disparate elements, she says, are bound together by sheer luck: “These objects might be on a sidewalk or in a museum, but all seem to be equally brave to survive—which is how I also feel about people.”
Kalman has authored over thirty books for both children and adults, and has designed theatrical sets, painted murals, created embroideries and performed in musical events. In 2010 the ICA in Philadelphia organized a survey of her work which traveled to three additional museums including The Jewish Museum in New York. In 2014 the Frist Museum in Nashville exhibited the gouache paintings from her illustrated The Elements of Style in their entirety for the first time.
