This event has ended.
Porter Contemporary presents Momentary Glimpses,a solo exhibition by Laura Shechter.
Momentary Glimpsesreflects the ever changing urban landscape of New York City through Laura Shechter’s “perceptualist” and realist oil paintings. Shechter, known for her still life and urban landscape paintings, focuses solely on urban landscapes inMomentary Glimpses. The exhibition captures the inconstant landscape of New York City since 2002, focusing primarily on the last 2 years of 2014 and 2015.
Shechter, born and raised in New York City, is more familiar than most of the city’s transitory nature and beauty. Shechter walks the five boroughs finding inspiration to tell the stories of growing neighborhoods: DUMBO, Bushwick and Williamsburg along with the subtleties of brief moments captured in views of Chinatown in Manhattan.
“Some views in Laura’s paintings will feel really familiar,” says gallery director and curator of this exhibition, Jessica L. Porter “while others make us feel like trespassers on some hidden scene. There are so many moments captured in Laura’s paintings that will disappear from this city possibly today, tomorrow or next yeararchitectural components as well as the graffiti depicted in many of the works. We are lucky to have it documented in this way.”
Laura Shechter is a contemporary realist painter, focusing on cityscapes and still lifes. She describes her practice as painting “a moment of light.” She achieves this through the use of rich color and a careful study of patterns and spatial relationships. She balances western and eastern aesthetics. Her influences include Northern Renaissance Art, Indian miniatures, and the feminist art movement.
Shechter received her BA in Fine Art from Brooklyn College, where she studied aesthetics under Ad Reinhardt. Her paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States. In 2013, she received a Puffin Foundation Grant, which seeks projects that enrich and inform the public on important subjects such as the environment, social justice, civil rights and other contemporary issues facing the country and the planet. Shechter is a member of the National Academy of Art.
