Brennan & Griffin presents an exhibition of new works by John Williams. For the past several years, John Williams has consolidated his investigations into sculpture, photography, and performance into an ongoing engagement with painting.
Williams’ paintings emerge from a small set of material - a few objects and colored film gels altered, joined together and made into something like sculpture. By filtering these objects through projected light and photographing the result, Williams compresses this three dimensional material into two dimensions and begins assembling the structure of his paintings. Transferring physical material into projected and photographic space, Williams explores the malleability of object and image. These ostensibly flat images are projected and painted in various states of completion, resolution, and distortion, to suggest relief, volume, and atmosphere. A broad range of actions: smears, modeled forms, and thick heaps of impasto works to overlap, envelop, expand and compress this painted armature into a kinetically inspired, materially driven image.
Williams’ practice has been characterized by his development of ideas through a fluid, and experimental approach to media. The artist’s Record Projection performances utilize a similar set of materials and image generating processes to synthesize experiments with sculpture, photography, and sound collage to develop a kinetic environment that evolves over time. In extending this conversation to painting, Williams exploits the medium’s capacity to be a fixed record of his activity. Here, the variegated application of pigment produces the collision of harmonious and discordant moments as a means to guide the viewer through the restless compositions. Concurrent and analogous experiments with ink on paper produced a series of mono prints that influence the evolution taking place in this body of work.
This is John Williams’ third exhibition with Brennan & Griffin. Williams recently mounted a solo exhibition at Richard Telles Fine Art, Los Angeles in 2014. Recent group exhibitions include: They Might Well Have Been Remnants of a Boat organized by The Calder Foundation, New York in 2013, Teenage Hallucination at the Pompidou Center, Paris in 2012, and The Mass Ornament at Barbara Gladstone, New York in 2010. Williams lives and works in Los Angeles.
