poster for Dennis Tomkins “Solastalgia” Part II

This event has ended.

‘Solastalgia’ is a word coined by Australian Philosopher Glenn Albrecht. (It) is an interpretation of a feeling of being overwhelmed by too much change too fast — change to our immediate environment be it our home, neighborhood, country or global environment. These changes challenge our identity and our sense of place. - DT 12/14

Tomkins was unaware of Albrecht or the word until recently: “Unknowingly… I have been creating works with these concerns for the last few years.”

The paintings are discordant and unsettling; the viewer is jarred into feeling displaced; the landscape cannot be defined.

Tomkins has worn a variety of hats within the parameters of the art world — painter, exhibitor, teacher, conservator and most recently he has catalogued the works of both Sam Goodman, co-founder of the No Art movement, and the self-taught artist, John Byam.
