Jon Legere “To Hackney and Back”

This event has ended.

My current work at the Brian Morris Project Space is a significant shift from previous work. All four pieces were created in the last few months at my studio in Brooklyn, New York after a year of living abroad in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

The departure from my earlier work is seen in the reduction of color and subject matter. The primary goal was to delete all distractions. I have removed all recognizable aspects of the selected images. No more eyes to look back at you or landscapes to add context. Just the original shapes that remain from the contours of deconstruction.

The color reduction is by no means a sign of chromophobia. Rather I’ve exchanged the sub tropical pastels of my Bermuda heritage for darker tones to focus on composition and form.

There is no pretension about source selection. The collage materials come from banal publications found at local retail stores, coffee shops and newspaper stands. The only prerequisite when choosing these materials is in the paper stock. I prefer uncoated newsprint which absorbs the matte medium better than coated stocks.

All the works are very representative of the physical and mental space I have returned to. The desire to sharpen, define my borders and make sense of past decisions is all necessary in my commitment moving forward.
