Lina Puerta “La Muerte de un Arbol (The Death of a Tree)”
Materials for the Arts Gallery
This event has ended.
Over the course of the Fall of 2014, Materials for the Arts Artist In Residence Lina Puerta worked inside NYC’s premier reuse facility sorting through the thousands of donated materials, carefully picking bits of lace, fabric, broken jewelry, and much more to create this series of sculptures and site-specific installation.
Lina Puerta spent this Fall in the warehouse studio looking through thousands of donated materials to build and create the body of work presented in La Muerte de un Arbol (The Death of a Tree). Her exhibit explores notions of decay, life and death through the use of mixed media - from fabrics and rhinestones to reused objects and concrete.
The exhibit is composed of seven works, including a large site-specific installation Cáscara (Peel) made from textured fabrics, lace and plastic. In Puerta’s own words, Cáscara “resembles an old tiled wall that is slowly deconstructed by nature and time. [It] portrays the fragility of the wall (dwelling) that seems to be gradually peeling off of the structure, layer by layer as if it was the bark of a tree.”
