Ellen Grossman “Surface Complex”
Art 101
This event has ended.
Grossman’s initial concentration on sculpture grew to include drawing, as the ideas and images of both became intertwined.
These drawings and sculptures are a response to topographic maps, satellite photos, scanning electron microscope images, astronomy and the unfolding of intertwined relationships. They emphasize the sensuous aspects of water currents, land masses and the wind made visible. — EG
Topographical drawings, sculptural moirés — the delicate tissue of mesmerizing lines lures one into Grossman’s world. The work is painstaking and meditative.
I think of my interest in topography as a way of bridging the sense of sight with the sense of touch. — EG
A graduate of Cooper Union, Ellen Grossman has shown extensively in the New York area and her work has been included in the Pierogi Flat Files since 2001. She was the recipient of a NYFA Fellowship Award for Drawings in 2011.
