The Publishing Residency program invites artists to collaborate with printers on ambitious new projects over a period of one year. During the past year, the artists collaborated with the Printshop’s studio team, Master Printer Erik Hougen, Printer Keigo Takahashi, and Assistant Printer Laura Charlton to create significant new bodies of work. Fully supported by the Printshop, each artist enjoyed the freedom to experiment with printmaking—a medium new to most of them—and to find their individual path. Thomas created stunning effects with an unusual retroreflective surface; Shepherd paid homage to Rembrandt by furthering her exploration of line and color; Fasnacht explored infinite possibilities of digital manipulation; while Tschäpe pursued diverse image-making techniques in a series of 71 unique screenprints.

HEIDE FASNACHT (b. 1951, Cleveland, OH; lives and works in New York, NY) received her MA from New York University and BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Select solo exhibitions include Kent Fine Art, New York, NY; Bernard Toale Gallery, Boston, MA; Pan American Gallery, Dallas, TX; and Qbox Gallery in Athens Greece. She is the recipient of fellowships from Pollock-Krasner Foundation, John Simon Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Public collections include Brooklyn Museum, NY; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CO; and she is represented by Kent Fine Art in New York.

KATE SHEPHERD (b. 1961, New York, NY; lives and works in New York, NY) received her BA from Oberlin College and MFA from School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. Select solo exhibitions include Bartha Contemporary, London, England; The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C; Galeria Elvira Gonzales, Madrid, Spain; and Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery, Houston, TX. Public collections include Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY; The Menil Collection, Houston, TX; New York Public Library, New York, NY; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA. Her work has been the subject of three monographs and she is represented by Galerie Lelong in New York and Paris; Antony Meier Fine Art in San Francisco; and Barbara Krakow Gallery in Boston.

HANK WILLIS THOMAS (b. 1976, lives and works in New York, NY) received his BFA from New York University, MA and MFA from California College of the Arts. Select solo exhibitions include The Cleveland Museum of Art, OH; The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT; and Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. His work is included in public and private collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Brooklyn Museum, NY; and High Museum of Art, Atlant, GA. Thomas is the recipient of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute Resident Fellowship from Harvard University and is represented by Jack Shainman Gallery in New York.

JANAINA TSCHÄPE
(b. 1973, Munich, Germany; lives and works in New York, NY, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) received her BFA from the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, Germany, and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. Select solo exhibitions include Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hong Kong, China; MOCA Tucson, AZ; Galeria Fortes Vilaca, São Paulo, Brazil; Tierney Gardarin, New York, NY; and Galerie Catherine Bastide, Brussles, Belgium. Her work is included in public and private collections including The National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Harvard Art Museum, Boston, MA; Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain. About the Essayist
MICAELA GIOVANNOTTI is a NY based independent curator. Since 2010, she has served as the curator for the not-for-profit organization More Art www.moreart.org. Born in Rome, she was U.S. Editor of Tema Celeste Contemporary Art Magazine from 2000-2006. She has curated shows in Italy, Miami, Toronto, Prague, and New York, including White Columns, White Box, and Affirmation Arts. Most recently, she curated Living and Dreaming for the Bronx Museum of the Arts and inside OUT at Cuchifritos in NY. In 2008 Giovannotti was critic-in-residence at the Art OMI International Artists Residency, NY. Extensively published in international art journals, she co-authored a book, Neo-Baroque! (Charta, 2005) and has contributed to other publications including IM02, L’Immagine Sottile, Galleria Comunale di Arte Contemporanea, Monfalcone, Italy (2007), and Stefano Cagol: Public Opinion (Charta, 2011).
