This event has ended.

Soho Photo Gallery’s November show features the winning entries in the 10th Annual National Alternative Processes Competition, as well as new alternative processes work by the gallery’s photographers. Nearly 650 images from across the United States were submitted to the competition.

Geoffrey Berliner, Executive Director and co-developer of the Penumbra Foundation, was the competition’s juror, judging images that utilized a wide range of alternative methods, including ambrotype, cyanotype, Van Dyke brown, platinum/palladium, photogravure, salt print, tintype, and wet-plate collodion.

“I feel that a photographer’s artistic vision and expression should be the most important aspect of their work,” Berliner commented. “The process, alternative or otherwise, should take a supporting role.To rely on the process itself as the art, regardless of how well or poorly executed the process is practiced, in my view, is not art.The photographs I selected express this ideal of a synthesis between the artists’ vision and the process in which they have chosen to work.”
