Yvonne Estrada Exhibition
Jason McCoy, Inc. (Midtown)
This event has ended.
Jason McCoy Gallery presents a selection of large abstract works on paper by Yvonne Estrada, spanning the past decade of the artist’s oeuvre.
Yvonne Estrada’s abstractions are mostly rooted in nature. Evocative of microscopic cell structures, her shapes are predominantly biomorphic and rich in detail. Set against spare white backgrounds, they can appear graphically crisp from afar, but become increasingly complex and layered upon close inspection.
Estrada’s sources of inspiration are eclectic and consciously non-concrete. She works associatively, without a narrative and largely from memory. Much in her work crystallizes through improvisation. This moment-to-moment contemplation makes for a process that is largely intuitive. Estrada’s gestures range from delicate and light, to dense, dark and intentionally heavy-handed. By employing the contrast between minute detail and broad mark-making, as well as between translucence and opacity, she succeeds in establishing an engaging sense of poetic dynamism.
By focusing on an overview of her large works on paper from the past decade, this exhibition aims to reveal the inspiring versatility Estrada has culled from her signature vocabulary.
Yvonne Estrada has exhibited extensively in the USA. Born in Bogotá in 1960 and raised in Colombia, she has been based in New York for the past three decades. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
