This event has ended.

Galerie Mourlot presents an exhibition of lithographic works by French artist Bernard Cathelin (1919 – 2004). For this exhibition, titled Bouquet de Fleurs, Galerie Mourlot installs a selection of the floral still-life images Cathelin printed with the Atelier Mourlot lithographic studio in Paris. During his lifetime, Cathelin created more than 400 limited edition lithographs, and almost all were printed with Mourlot. In Bouquet de Fleurs, Galerie Mourlot displays a dozen of Cathelin’s signed and framed lithographs on Arches paper, many of which contain a special dedication to Jacques Mourlot and his wife, Liliane. These works range from the late-1960s to the 1990s.

The bold color palette Cathelin employs in many of the lithographs in Bouquet de Fleurs is most likely an inflection of his travels. In these decades the artist traveled widely and frequently, from Mexico, South America and Europe to Morocco, Japan and the West Indies. Like his well-known canvases and tapestries, Cathelin’s lithographic still-life images are rendered somewhat abstractly, his focus centering on color, form and the blending of background and foreground. The vibrant works on view in Bouquet de Fleurs are exquisite examples of the artistic style of a prolific and important modern artist.

Cathelin was born in 1919 in Paris. He studied at the Lycées Carnot and Janson de Sailly in Paris, the Lycée Emile Loubet in Valence, and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. He was then a teacher in the Preparatory Studio of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs until 1953. Although a devoted countryman, Cathelin left France often, traveling and exhibiting all over the world, predominantly in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Cathelin’s awards include the Blumenthal Prize, Emily Loewe Prize, and the Othon Friesz Prize.
