frosch&portmann presents Eccentric Abstraction, 2014, a group exhibition curated by Bill Weiss.

Within the canon of Abstract Painting exists a full spectrum of underlying concepts and motives. At one end of the spectrum there is an austere formalism based on, or illustrating, a rational or mathematical ideal. At the other end of this spectrum is an eccentric variety of abstraction. Using the same formal elements of grids, planar divisions, geometric or gestural shapes, this work will arise from different motives and achieve ends that are more personal, expressive, and at times, embracing the spontaneous and even the irrational.

In 1966 Lucy Lippard curated an exhibit at the Fishbach Gallery in New York titled Eccentric Abstraction. This current exhibit, of the same title, shows work of current painters working within this same tradition.

Douglas Florian is a painter, poet, and author. He was born and currently lives and works in New York City.
The imagery in his quirky and evocative paintings is both playful and ironic. Found plywood is often used as a support, further contributing to the poetic content of the work.Douglas has also written and illustrated several award winning books for children.
Douglas Florian is represented in New York by BravinLee Programs.

David Hayward was born in New Zealand and currently lives and works in Washington, D.C. and Brooklyn, New York.
The paintings are drawn from an intuitive process in which he invents, borrows, and discovers that which resonates with him. The process is one of constant reworking. A physical thought process where Ideas and eventual resolution arrive as new elements are added and subtracted.
David’s work was recently shown in a solo show at frosch&portmann in New York

Mamie Holst was born in Gainesville, Florida and currently lives and works in Fort Myers, Florida.
The paintings in this show are from her ongoing series titled: “Landscape Before Dying”. Using a palette of black, white and grey, these paintings use imagery that is reductive and primal in nature, of feeling rather than rationality. In an interview with the late Hudson of Feature Gallery, Mamie said that the subject matter of her work, are the mysteries of life. Mamie was most recently represented by Feature Gallery in New York.

Richard Allen Morris was born in Long Beach, California. Subsequent to his service in the US Navy, he has continued to reside and work in San Diego, California.
The physical nature of the paint is combined with the poetic quality of open space. The paintings are done with a very direct and spontaneous process, with little or no revision. In this regard, there is reference to the tradition of Eastern painting as opposed to the western tradition.
Richard Allen Morris is represented in La Jolla, California by RB Stevenson Gallery.

Leslie Wayne was born in Germany and currently lives and works in New York City.
The work encompasses issues of both painting and sculpture. The laws of nature and the nature of process are among the many sources of her work. Leslie says her paintings are serious in their playfulness, joyful in their seriousness, and resolute in their lack of linguistic fixity.
Leslie Wayne is represented in New York by the Jack Shainman Gallery.

Bill Weiss was born in New Jersey and currently lives and works in New York City.
A self-taught painter, Bill has developed a highly personal and symbolic image vocabulary. In this current group of paintings, titled Ovals, he combines playful and rigorous process utilizing a non-rectangular support.
Bill Weiss is represented in New York by the Elizabeth Harris Gallery.
