A.I.R. Gallery presents Liminal Communities, an exhibition of work by A.I.R. Gallery’s National & International Artists, curated by Lucy Li. The exhibition brings together the work of 19 diverse artists from across the United States and from Israel. The show, intended to initiate conversations on what it means to be a woman artist today.

Curator Lucy Li states that although the styles and media of A.I.R. Gallery’s National/International Artists are “stunningly diverse…together this group emanates a sense of coherence, perhaps due to their firm commitment to A.I.R. Gallery’s mission and ever evolving role… It’s impossible to speak about A.I.R. Gallery itself without considering the role of feminism in art and the role of art in feminism… Most works in this exhibition do not bear blatant feminist agendas. All genuinely incorporate the experience of being a woman in the contemporary world, which now can be manifested in a wide range of imaginative ways of being.”

Founded in 1972, A.I.R. was the first artist-run gallery for women in the United States. During a time when the majority of commercial galleries in New York City showed almost exclusively male artists, A.I.R.’s goal was to provide a professional and permanent exhibition space for women. The National/International Artists Program was added in 1981 to enrich A.I.R. Gallery by introducing regional perspectives.
