Garis & Hahn presents Lower than the Lowest Animal, a solo show of 6 new paintings by William Buchina in the gallery’s downstairs exhibition space for the artist’s first solo show with Garis & Hahn.
Lower than the Lowest Animal continues Buchina’s practice from the past 5 years, where the artist has chosen different images, sourced from the internet, rare books, and serendipitously stumbled upon, and re-drawn them, making them his own. In this newest series, he works in a two panel presentation overlaid with small circular images that float above their background as if appearing in a different plane. As the artist explains it, the circular planes are a close-up while the
background is a view from a distance.
Buchina, who always uses tremendous care in his use and application of color, confines it primarily to these spheres in his newest work. Used sparingly, and with the sharp contrast of the black lines, the colors achieve an intensity and inexplicable texture and mood to the overall composition.
Just as a collector feels deep personal connection with the history of the objects they collect, Buchina’s work, and the images he sources from, have deep personal connection to the artist. Unbound by theme or subject, instead the images have the artist himself in common, and the place and time he was in when when making them. In this way they achieve a nuanced portrait of the artist, as reflected in the people, places, things, and ideas that create the baseline of his imagination.
About the Artist
William Buchina graduated with a BFA in communications design from the Pratt Institute in 2001. After extensive travelling in Europe and the far east, Buchina settled in Istanbul and founded the art magazine, That Magazine in 2009. He has been painting since then and moved back to New York in 2011.
