This event has ended.

The 1985 photographs were never displayed and Rose began to work on other projects, notably his acclaimed series “Time and Space on the Lower East Side.” While a bustling meat market during the morning, these early images reveal an almost sleepy neighborhood that lay vacant for most of the day. Upon re-discovering the images in his archive two years ago Rose writes, “it was like looking at New York as a stage set while the actors were away taking a break.” In 1985 who could have predicted this quiet desolate neighborhood to become one of the city’s most vibrant and bustling areas?

Fast forward to 2013 and the attitude of the Meatpacking District has entirely changed. Gone are the butchers and empty streets and in their place hotels, nightclubs, and high-end retail. The 2013 photographs reveal the vibrancy and excitement that is today’s Meatpacking district, today one of the city’s most sought-after locations.

Brian Rose was born in Virginia and attended University of Virginia’s architecture and urban planning school from 1972 to 1974. He came to New York City in 1977 to attend Copper Union where he received is B.F.A in 1979. His work can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York City Department of Park and Recreation and the Canadian Centre for Architecture. He currently resides in New York.
