This event has ended.

NOVELLA presents Around the Corner, a solo exhibition of new paintings and drawings by Georgia Elrod. Painted from memory, these works are a translation of the artist’s subconscious and imagination. In this recent work there is an atmosphere of reflection and absence, and the anticipation of potential narratives. Inspired by the unanswered questions and complexities that surround the artist’s own family history, the work is an exploration of the past and a search for clarity that both fills in the blanks and creates new ones.

Elrod makes many drawings in ink on paper and these often inspire larger paintings. These luminous works have a light-blasted quality; thinly painted surfaces subtly suggest edges, layers, and the spaces in between. Paint has been added but also intentionally rubbed out, creating form through removal. This subtraction, along with the addition of drawing in pastel has become an increasingly important aspect of the artist’s process.

Around the Corner presents stages, openings, and visions of a world quietly reverberating with something just out of reach. The work suggests a sense of anticipation and invites the viewer to explore.

Georgia Elrod is a New York City based artist and painter. Her work has been exhibited in New York and abroad at a variety of spaces, including John Davis Gallery, Jay Etkin Gallery in Memphis, and RH+Gallery in Istanbul. Georgia is a curator and co-runner of Heliopolis Project, in Greenpoint Brooklyn. She received her MFA in Painting from Hunter College in 2010, and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
