This event has ended.

The title of this exhibition suggests a philosophical stance where heightened awareness of the present is paramount. This is the position from which Ro Lohin operates while painting and drawing. Each mark and color choice applied to canvas or paper equates to an exact sensation, either observed or felt, from a personal interaction with her subject.

The current body of work, completed over the past four years, is a mapping of experience, a call and response extravaganza that places the artist as a conduit between sensation and expression. Worked on over many sessions, Lohin’s paintings change and morph with her accumulated perceptions of natural phenomena such as shifting patterns of dappled light, branches swaying in the wind, or heat waves radiating from an afternoon sun. This keen observation is filtered through Lohin’s deep knowledge of Modern art and the history of painting. The pulse of artists similarly engaged with this sort of communion such as Paul Cézanne, Chaim Soutine and Charles Burchfield is felt throughout Lohin’s oeuvre.

Lohin’s accomplishment stems from a life-long obsessive drawing practice. Through this practice, she developed a vast array of expressive brushstrokes employed with complex and emotionally charged color combinations. She conjures an animated metaphor where landscape and still-life express the feelings and psychology of the artist and also speak to a universal response where deeply felt moments of perception become transformative.

Ro Lohin received a BFA from University of North Carolina at Greensboro, studied at the New York Studio School, and earned an MFA from Parsons School of Design. She was assistant to the Dean and drawing faculty at the New York Studio School and has taught painting at the School of Art and Design at Alfred University, Western Carolina University and the Chautauqua Institution. She was Director of the Lohin Geduld Gallery in New York.
