Baruch College presents the exhibition Captured Objects: Prints by Devorah Boxer at the Mishkin Gallery.

Sieves and drills, potato mashers and hinges—printmaker Devorah Boxer captures and reanimates objects. Her masterful use of black and white tones — and the subtle gradations in between — defines each object’s detailed surface and creates drama through the representation of its pared down form. Finding beauty in the most humble forms, Boxer translates objects into poetry.

With close-up views and intricate details, she creates “portraits” of her objects and gives them life. These objects, while seemingly banal, become heroic. Boxer’s print Shaker Brush, 2010, is animated as if it is brushing a surface. Yet, most of the handle of the brush, as well as the hand that may be holding it, does not appear.

The brush is the subject of the print, filling the entire space and acquiring a monumental scale. Without a narrative or even a setting, this object becomes the protagonist of an unknown drama. The individual strands of the brush are numerous and carefully delineated—not just masses of tone—and even the knots where they connect to the wooden handle can be seen. Although it is clearly documented with many details, this brush retains an aura of mystery.

The exhibition, curated by Sandra Kraskin, features a broad range of Boxer’s work—etchings, woodcuts, and related drawings—created over the past three decades. Although she was born in Troy, New York and educated in the United States, Devorah Boxer has lived and worked in Paris since 1959. The objects she portrays often represent an earlier era and frequently come from French flea markets. These old-fashioned objects add a quality of nostalgia to her otherwise stark forms.
