TURF presents “AYTI: Recycling Dystopian Dreamscapes.” For decades Haiti has been mired in poverty, political instability and violence. After successive natural disasters, the country is still recovering from a deadly earthquake that struck in 2010. Shedding a more positive light on Haiti and its diaspora in North America, TURF seeks to dispel any dismal tales of dystopia. Instead, this exhibition explores the underlying role of Vodou in challenging some of the myths surrounding Haiti through film, paintings, installation, Drapo Vodou and mixed-media. These works (1984-2014) tell a more vibrant story, in which Vodou plays a transformative role, turning the remnants of Haiti into dreamscapes.Ultimately, TURF reveals some compelling visual narratives on the role of artistic practice and syncretic belief systems in recycling memory, place and time.

The gallery is open weekly, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12:00pm until 7:00pm
and Sundays and Mondays by appointment only.
