This event has ended.

In her first solo exhibition at Rooster Gallery, Arianna Carossa focuses on the notion of decadence. Following her researches on failure as both a starting point and a conclusion of all human domains – whether civilizational or artistic – decadence is the logical and visible accompanying symptom of failure.

A failure of a system, according to Carossa, implies a dwelve on repetition, the use of tired models or canons, the collapse of originality, the inability of reinvention, the perversion of morals and ethics, hedonistic self-indulgence, which ultimately is embodied by decadence. Such was the case of the so-called Hellenistic period, a period often considered of transition and even of decadence when compared to the brilliance of the Greek Classical period. Such is the case of nowadays capitalist system.

By appropriating classical imagery the artist creates eccletic narratives, a compilation of already known and often used historical aesthetic solutions. The impossibility of the artist creating something truly original and new does not mean that Carossa does not understand this limitation. In fact, she recognizes the tragedy of failure and tries to contradict it by assuming she is also part of that tragedy, by neglecting the indulgence of self-congratulation, by electing her personal idiossincrasies and the multitude of the self, thus exposing her own contradictions.
