Bryan Collier “It Starts with Just a Seed”

Brooklyn Public Library (Central)

This event has ended.

Original collages created for children’s books, including artwork from his latest book, Knock, Knock: My Dad’s Dream for Me, I, Too, Am America, and others.

I am really fanatical about all textures of paper and just love gluing these parts together. I think the quilts my grandmother made when I was a kid really influenced that whole act of
making collages, to piece parts together to make something whole. This exhibition includes pieces from my books Knock, Knock—My Dad’s Dream for Me, Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet,
Slave, Visiting Langston, Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Martin Luther King, Jr., Uptown, and Doreen Rappaport’s Freedom River.

Bryan Collier grew up in Pocomoke, Maryland, the youngest of six children. A graduate of Pratt Institute, Collier is a three-time runner-up for the Caldecott Medal for Martin’s Big Words, Rosa, and Dave the Potter. Collier spends his time working on his book illustrations, creating his own studio pieces and going into classrooms to talk with teachers, librarians, and students about books and art.
