The Phatory presents From Afar a thirty-year retrospective of photographs by Jim Jennings.
Although Jennings is best known as an experimental filmmaker, he has also worked extensively as a photographer. While Jennings films often take the form of exquisitely sequenced glimpses of urban environments and the people who populate them his still work likewise embraces similar themes. Taken from a perspective that is at once distant and empathetic, the photographs peer into public spaces and streets capturing pedestrians and onlookers subsumed in the massive scale and denseness of the cityscape. As the eye travels across these beautifully printed black and white images, it poises between strokes of deep shadows and brilliant light and Jennings’ unobtrusive observations of city life.
Jim Jennings grew up in Connecticut and currently lives in Queens. His films have been widely shown in art house circuits and film festivals, and are included in well known anthologies and collections.
