This event has ended.

At the dawn of the twentieth century, Manhattan’s landscape was blanketed by smoke with cinders falling to the streets below from steam powered elevated trains. When the Manhattan Railway Company built the 74th Street Powerhouse, the largest alternate current power station to date, it was a marvel of engineering that transformed the city by replacing steam engines with cleaner electric locomotives. The construction of the powerhouse and its early days of operation are captured in photographs from the New York Transit Museum’s collection.
