The title of this 3-person show refers to the ways in which these painters seamlessly marry abstraction and figuration infused with light.
There is an interest in cartooning evidenced in Gibson’s scrawled, near sketchbook-like paintings of text, the occasional face or heart. Lee’s paintings are dedicated to the sensuality of form. Using close values and layered washes, her pieces often explore fruits, vegetables and heads. Using vivid color against deep blues and reds. Cedar’s paintings are mysterious and melancholic. Her large paintings feature obstructed views of architecture wherein isolated figures emerge and disappear. Lee’s painting, “Self-Portrait (KL)” is composed of grays, blues, and creamy earth tones. Her quick, jagged contour lines create a profile of a head and also read as sinewy, abstract marks. Gibson’s work “En Progress” captures adolescent nostalgia with visual wit. Boar’s Head meat packages, an earring, painted lips, hearts and text comes together to create a personal narrative that is obsessive, bizarre and emotional. Cedar’s works on view blend abstracted elements of interiors with partially rendered human bodies. Her figures seem to hover in an in-between space, conjuring up psychological states of mind. Each artist in “How The Light Gets In” culls the natural world for source material. Their resulting paintings are quirky, fun and unexpected.
