Onishi Gallery presents SUMMER GARDEN, a stunning new exhibition featuring three contemporary artists—Osamu Kobayashi, Shinji Murakami, and Gail Stoicheff—working in oil, acrylic, and mixed media to create seductive images that reach beyond their wood and canvas panels with alluring mystique. In collaboration with the Catinca Tabacaru Gallery, representing an international array of artists at a new gallery in the Lower East Side arts district, SUMMER GARDEN will open on the highly anticipated evening of the Chelsea Art Walk, July 24, 2014.

Osamu Kobayashi, born in South Carolina and living in New York, works with oil paint and canvas to create dream-like colorscapes marked by areas of intricate design, drawing the viewer into his saturated palette. Kobayashi writes, “The aim is to create work with a sensation similar to that of a clear thought: the idea has its bases covered; there’s no room for argument. In reality, however, these paintings can never be clear thoughts; they are much more open than that. They are more of a confrontation: between what I desire to know and what I can never know entirely.” Kobayashi describes his painting process as a power struggle between him and his artwork, the paintings always winning. In 2013, for his highly textured and dramatically reductionist paintings, Kobayashi won the Hassam, Speicher, Betts, and Symons Purchase Fund awards.

Shinji Murakami, a Japanese artist born in Osaka and living in New York, is inspired by 8-bit video game expressions, simple vector lines, and youthful creativity as a way to understand how the “virtual” world and the “real” world intertwine. Murakami has worked with 3D sculptures since 2003 in addition to the acrylic-on-wood panels of digital visual play. His vibrantly colored 2D- and 3D-pixilated depictions of flowers, streets, and nipples—common themes in Murakami’s work—evoke nostalgia for the past as well as imagination of future possibilities of creative expression. In 2011, Murakami was featured in the highly influential “100 Artists to Watch” edition of Modern Painters by Art Info.

Gail Stoicheff, born in Pennsylvania, examines how modes of cultural production intersect with the creative process in her artwork. Stoicheff has worked in both abstract and figurative styles, exploring power and emotion through an awareness of her artistic process. She draws upon politics, fashion, music, and celebrity in her oil painting practice. This exhibition includes her most recent work that considers the ‘exotic,’ animal and symbols of mysticism as they coincide with the mythos of nonobjective painting. Stoicheff was the recipient of Robert Motherwell’s prestigious Dedalus Foundation Master of Fine Arts Fellowship in Painting and The Elaine DeKooning Painting Award, and was recently the featured cover artist for Little Star Weekly literary journal and the New England Review.
