One of two works on view at BAM, from a series of 17 photographs that Kremer produced in conjunction with Kremer’s third solo show at Julie Saul Gallery. The Museum of the City of New York and The Bronx Museum of the Arts will also show additional works from the series.
Israeli artist Shai Kremer’s latest series, Concrete Abstract, is a universal and individual response to the destruction and rebuilding of the World Trade Towers. Timed to coincide with the opening of the new World Trade Center, these monumental photographs are an evocation of site, a remembrance of tragedy, and a progression towards healing, based on what Kremer calls “a post-traumatic gaze to the cityscape of Manhattan—and by extrapolation, to the sociological landscape of America.”
In 2011, Kremer was granted access to the construction site of One World Trade Center, which he photographed for two years. The artist combines these copious images to illustrate the site’s former self as well as its years of reconstruction, using a process that links accumulation, destruction, and reconstruction, and forming images that are formally and psychologically complex. As the series progresses, we can see the building itself taking shape. Whereas in past work he expressed his vision through individual images, in this series he layers images within one frame, building evocative abstract compositions.
