This exhibition provides a perspective on contemporary art practice in Bolivia. Artists residing in La Paz and Santa Cruz present an explosion of work that is connected aesthetically and politically to the history and future of Bolivia in relation to international events. The work included provides both an awareness of the past and a forward-thinking connection to the present. Much of the work by the younger artists is performance-based, acted out in public squares for a participating public that is eager to participate in a new vision of Bolivia. The work alternates between a reconciling of the confines of the past and a reshaping of the past into new constructs. The work of these artists is politically and personally provocative. Though many of these artists recoil from having their work termed “political” because their lives are already so steeped in a history of conflict, it remains as a form of engagement, a part of the everyday and unavoidable. It is always present and inextricable from their art, as much as it is visible in the history of Bolivia itself.
