Christian Schumann “Mutate and Proceed”
Kravets/Wehby Gallery
This event has ended.
Kravets Wehby Gallery presents Mutate and Proceed, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Christian Schumann.
Christian Schumann’s remarkably organic process grows more richly in this new body of work. The perseverance of nature, meditation and wonderment at the vastness of the universe resonate in his surfaces.
Beginning with colorful squiggly paintings, the theme of a future habitat mutated into new forms has taken shape, overtaken by natural processes that subsume artificial structures. The idea of a last forest on Earth surviving whatever cataclysms may have occurred; the forest becomes the final and victorious biome.
The mark making in this body of work widens from the denseness of the wild nature of plants to the exploration of space and a peaceful methodology. In creating the star paintings Schumann set a limitation to only paint stars, reminiscent of comic book or cartoon stars he is drawing a pop art reconciliation between the sublime and man made imagery. The twinkling stars are a way to concentrate on the melding of natural and organic development of the painting with artificial structures of reason. Abstraction in harmony with nature.
This will be Christian Schumann’s second solo show at the Kravets Wehby Gallery, his work has also been exhibited at White Cube in London, and Gagosian, LA. His work is also a part of the Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art’s permanent collection.
