This event has ended.

Cheryl Hazan Contemporary Art presents Choices, a group show featuring painting, sculpture, prints, and mixed media. This diverse array of talented artists pervades the gallery with a mixture of figurative, landscape, and abstract work interwoven into a complex and invigorating exhibition. Each artists’ work claims its own presence in the space while contributing to a loose communal narrative. There are shared sensibilities of dynamic color, subtle vision, complete finesse, and a powerful use of space.

The poignant and political work of Banksy combines play, design, and pop culture. In his signature style, Nola (New Orleans Louisiana) was originally painted on a wall in New Orleans after Katrina and incorporates innocence, humor, and political undertones. Basquiat’s 1982 Jawbone of an Ass connects with many of the pieces in the show - its expressive mark making, figures, writing, and palette reflect the visual diversity of this exhibition. The powerful linear weight and movement of Bernar Venet’s steel sculptures incorporates a visceral expression that reaches and connects to the two dimensional work. Emotionally charged gravitational paintings of Hyunmee Lee bring a meditative interaction of mark making, color, and space, while the sensual, historical and contemporary narrative dichotomy of Jeff Muhs’ paintings is saturated with emotion and passion. Texture and humor in the landscapes of Sebastian Mahon’s paintings is pervaded with light and shadow into a wonderful high contrast dreamscape. Tom Brydelsky uses encaustic as a veil and window into his photographic environments that consist of people and nature, forming and then blurring any boundaries that exist.
