This event has ended.

Louis B. James Gallery presents Hood Pass, a solo exhibition of new photographs and video by Stephen McClintock. Working with a variety of cameras and film, McClintock approaches the medium with an appreciation for craftsmanship that veers from the ubiquity of digital enhancement and post-production alterations.

McClintock immerses himself in skate culture with a biographic lens that creates a distinct window into various neighborhoods throughout New York City, and frequently recalls the impact of growing up in Camden County, New Jersey. As he explores urban landscapes, the artist records his encounters with imagery and subjects that are continually marginalized by mainstream society.
Prints such as Food Series #1, 2014 (above) appropriate commercial imagery that explores the balance of grotesque beauty as it exists within the quotidian elements of pedestrian city culture, and evokes the viewer’s curiosity with palatable colors and textures that vacillate between the appealing and the appalling. While he also depicts individuals that the public would preferably overlook, McClintock’s work is
forthcoming in a documentary style that cleverly captures the veracity of the human condition. By observing life with a refreshing authenticity, McClintock shares with the viewer a unique vantage point onto images that are often dismissed, yet this particular show offers a hood pass underlined with a subtext which reads, “It is okay to stare.”
