This event has ended.

Tally Beck Contemporary presents the second solo exhibition in New York for Japanese artist Nobuhito Nishigawara.

The show will consist of approximately a dozen sculptures based on iconic elements of Japanese and Western art. Nishigawara focuses on dichotomies and the blending of cultures. He combines images of toys with replicas of pre-historic and ancient artifacts to convey a sense of visual cross-pollination. Having immigrated from Japan when he was 15 years old, he likes to incorporate images of haniwa as a means to construct identity.

Nishigawara has shown extensively in exhibitions on the West Coast and had his first New York solo show in the autumn of 2012 with Tally Beck Contemporary. He has also shown with Tally Beck Contemporary at artMRKT Hamptons and Art Asia Miami in 2012, at artMRKT San Francisco in 2013, and at the Los Angeles Art Show in 2014. He is an Associate Professor of Art at California State Fullerton and a Visiting Professor at UCLA.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Tally Beck Contemporary will also present three special lectures and relevant tours. On Wednesday evening, February 12, art historian and gallerist Tally Beck will present a lecture entitled A Brief History of Japanese Art: Neolithic to Modern. The following Wednesday, February 17, the second part, A Brief History of Japanese Art: Modern and Contemporary, will be presented. The artist will visit the gallery and give a talk about his work on Wednesday, March 19. The gallery will also offer a series of art tours that focus on Japanese art in museums and galleries in New York City.
