Born in Barranquilla on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Tovar received his degree from the School of Fine Arts in Boston following years of self-training as an artist and degrees in Architectural Design from Universidad de los Andes and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia.
Tovar’s paintings are distinct in their compositions as well as their use of chiaroscuro. The artist uses light arbitrarily but wisely. He follows the laws of light to emphasize what he considers essential. The rest, the accessory, is lost in various degrees of shadows, including total darkness. His architectural background is evident in the construction of his compositions and the presence of well defined columns, doors, windows, terraces or tiled floors.
Throughout his artistic career, Tovar has focused his work on several genres. In the words of Marie-Claire Piganeau of the Ecole du Louvre in Paris, France, “One is surprised in the variety of his pictorial expressions and often wonders: is Tovar a figurative or abstract, expressionist or hyper-realistic painter? Tovar is all of that at once.”
