AMERINGER | McENERY | YOHE presents an exhibition of recent works by Iva Gueorguieva. A fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Elizabeth Frank accompanies the exhibition.

Comprised of interwoven layers of ripped and torn muslin, linen, potent pigments, and diluted washes of color, Iva Gueorguieva creates a palpable energy and sense of kinetic frenzy that reverberates through her turbulent paintings and skeleton-like sculptures.

She works on multiple paintings at once, all at varying degrees of completion, to take advantage of the spontaneous nature of the process to conjoin sometimes-divergent thoughts into assemblages of chaotic symmetry. The sculptures, like the paintings, derive from the artist’s organic, no holds barred method of production.

In a mode signaling a firm grasp of modern Abstraction, Gueorguieva seamlessly intertwines the energy and movement of the Italian Futurists and the fragmentary planes of Analytic Cubism with the allusion of Matissean like figurations. All the while rejecting the formal dogma of those movements, Gueorguieva subverts the seemingly hollow abstractions with an infusion of intimate narrative - the very marrow of the artist - to create an imperfect harmony within her works.

Iva Gueorguieva was born in Bulgaria in 1974. She received an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.

Gueorguieva has had recent solo exhibitions at such venues as ACME., Los Angeles, CA; Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Los Angeles, CA; BravinLee Programs, New York, NY; Lux Art Institute, Encinitas, CA; Angles Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Stitching Outline, Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Pomona Museum of Art, Claremont, CA.

Recent group exhibitions include Galerie Lelong, New York, NY; the Contemporary Art Museum, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL; Pasadena Museum of Art, Pasadena, CA; and Dunn and Brown Contemporary, Dallas, TX.

Her work is included in many public and private collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN; and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA. She is the recipient of the Orange County Contemporary Collectors Fellowship Award in 2012, the California Community Foundation Mid-Career Fellowship in 2010, and the Pollock-Krasner Grant in 2006.

Gueorguieva lives and works in Los Angeles.
