Susan Hockaday “After Nature: Photograms and Drawings”
Soho20 Chelsea Gallery
This event has ended.
In an exhibit of photograms and drawings, Susan Hockaday uses trash to portray the impact of humans on the planet, which has led to disturbed patterns of nature. Fragments of debris are employed to create troubled, barren landscapes. In STRANGE WEATHER, nine photograms depict the ring of detritus that orbits the earth. Satellites, probes, and space junk crowd the night sky beyond our view. Familiar shapes filled with tiny bits of trash remind us of our life on earth. Over all a weather map alludes to threatening weather systems. In a similar way, floating detritus has replaced sea life in the four photograms entitled OFF SHORE. In her drawings on translucent mylar, Hockaday presents landscapes which have been overtaken by trash, especially plastic. By drawing with pencils and pens around fragments of debris, Hockaday creates images of a cluttered surface of the earth, without the usual natural elements. Throughout her career Susan Hockaday has used art as a means of exploring aspects of nature. She combines a scientific education with an instinct for design gained from her childhood in the countryside in a family of artists and architects. She has worked in many mediums, including etching, handmade paper, collage constructions and photography. A graduate of Vassar College, she also studied at the Pratt Graphics Center in New York, Princeton University, and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has lived and worked in Holland and England, and travelled widely in Europe and Asia. In 1983 she lectured on ‘Art in New York’ in several cities in China. For many years she has lived and worked during the summer on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. She has received several Fellowships, and her work is included in public and private collections. Susan Hockaday is represented by SOHO20 Gallery in New York.
