Bill Dixon’s work bridges the worlds of handmade and digital art. Starting out by drawing freehand, he then uses a giclee process to produce both digital prints on paper and “digital handmade paintings” — works that are printed on canvas. Those images mix the immediate presence of the artist’s hand with the clarity of computer-generated imagery. Dixon says that his favorite media to execute his pieces in have always been pencils, color markers and acrylics. The bright hues that those media provide are a perfect match for the intensity that can be achieved through digital printing.

But it is not just their take on color that distinguishes Bill Dixon’s works. There’s also his ability to communicate motion, whether in renderings of people in movement, or abstractions in which the dynamic thrust comes from the interplay of colors as well as the textures and rhythms with which those colors are applied. “My inspiration,” the artist says, “comes from the desire to create artwork that pulls you in.” Through their unique method of composition and their engaging style, his images are a fitting embodiment of that inspiration.
