This event has ended.

RYAN LEE presents a selection of single-channel videos by gallery artist Kakyoung Lee in RLWindow, including Walk (2010), Family Portrait (2010), and Dance, Dance, Dance (2011)- ambitious projects that consider what she describes as “the monotonous daily ritual” and articulate her own identity.

Each video employs repetitive, meticulous mark-making techniques to translate a particular, mundane action through performance. Using drypoint, Lee deconstructs each performance into single moments and then assembles together these individual elements using animation to reconstruct the initial action. Through this process of deconstruction and reconstruction, new imagery emerges and Lee is able to subtly add to the history of her actions. Dance, Dance, Dance depicts the artist dancing alone, as one might in their bedroom. The soundtrack was composed for this particular piece by Natacha Diels and the title is borrowed from Haruki Murakami’s 1994 novel, also called “Dance Dance Dance.” In Walk, Lee pushes a stroller with her children while Family Portrait shows the artist with her children as they prepare to take a photograph.

The videos have screened previously at Hofstra University, Hempstead; Museum of Contemporary Art, Banja Luka, Bosnia; Oqbo, Berlin, DE; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC; Deutscher Bundestag Berlin, DE; Latitude Festival, UK; Museum Folkwang, Essen, DE; Museum of Modern Art, Korea; and Kunsthalle Bremen, DE, among others.
