“Erasing Borders 2014” Exhibition
Crossing Art
This event has ended.
Crossing Art hosts the The Indo American Arts Council’s (IAAC) tenth annual event, Erasing Borders 2014: Exhibition of Contemporary Art of the Diaspora curated by Vijay Kumar. This group exhibition explores and draws from the experiences o f artists whose origins can be traced to the Indian subcontinent. Cultural dislocation often produces un expected and profound results; memory collides with exile, culture engages with adaptation to understand the powerful and often disturbing concepts of change and assimilation. The artists confront issue s of sexuality, terror, disease and multiple identities to weave together existence in a globalized context while subject matter is often drawn from he country of origin, many of the aesthetic values and politic al concerns come from the artists’ at newfound situations. The result deserves a new “ism”, a new jou rney to an old destination. Curator Vijay Kumar explains that , “the immigrant experience ha s been transformed in only a few generations. Living in the diaspora no longer means that family , friends and hometowns are irrevocably left behind. While some artists focus unblinkingly on global conflict and turmoil, still others explore the l permutations of perspective, or a continuing fascination with wildlife in the urban jungle.”
