This event has ended.

Different Distances: Fashion Photography Goes Art shows the work of five internationally renowned Swedish fashion photographers, presented by the Consulate General of Sweden and the Swedish Institute at Aperture to coincide with New York Fashion Week.

Curated by Greger Ulf Nilson, the exhibition strives to create a balance between art and fashion photography by taking into account cultural history as well as the photographers’ personal experiences. Denise Grünstein, Julia Hetta, Martina Hoogland Ivanow, Julia Peirone, and Elisabeth Toll belong to a new generation of Swedish fashion photographers whose work is found in both international fashion publications and art institutions worldwide. In her maverick photographs, Denise Grünstein masterfully switches between atmospheres, both in her own creations and works she has done on commission. Her main focus is the theme of women and nature, creating a powerful and suggestive visual world. Julia Hetta’s romantic images depict an alternate universe inhabited by mysterious and omniscient beings, composed of saturated colors and realistic textures. Martina Hoogland Ivanow’s photographs have a real and poetic presence, combined with a menacing, hypnotic aesthetic. Julia Peirone captures fleeting moments beyond our control. Elisabeth Toll’s photographs are inspired by personal memories, stories, impressions, and sensations, with strong links to architecture and surrealism.
