Phyllis Rosser “The Forest and The Garden”

Ceres Gallery

This event has ended.

In her solo exhibition opening April 1st, Phyllis Rosser compares the uncontrolled energy of the forest with the orchestrated utopia of the garden. She explores the life force and mysteries of the forest with tree limbs stripped bare of their bark and assembled into large abstract constructions that echo the strength and randomness of nature. Art Historian/Critic Anne Swartz finds Rosser’s sculptures become “talismans of nature’s force, power and beauty… maintaining the sensuality and naked appeal of the wood’s hewn surface.”
The landscape and flower paintings focus on the romance of the human recreation of nature in the landscape and on the beauty of colors and shapes, the eroticism of blossoms. The viewer looks at the flowers close up, as if they have been magnified for our understanding and pleasure. Swartz says “we’re looking at nature in it’s glory, at its most copious … the flowers are truly romantic in that they are both beautiful (vital forms) and sublime (prompting a sense of awe at the spectacle of nature).” The landscapes offer a vista integrating flowers and trees into the fabric of the city or the countryside.
The Forest and the Garden will include 5 large and 8 smaller sculptures as well as 4 landscape and flower paintings. This is Phyllis Rosser’s 18th solo show. She is represented in numerous private and public collections including the Microsoft Art Collection, the Smith College Museum of Art and Johnson & Johnson and has appeared in many group shows in New York, New Jersey and New England.
