This event has ended.

Light Heavy is Maya Hayuk’s first solo exhibition in Manhattan and third solo exhibition with Cinders Gallery. Light Heavy as a title couldn’t be more fitting. These large scale paintings are radiating with light. Its the kind of light that leaves you no choice but to walk towards it and bask under its rays. Color has always played an important role in Maya’s visual language and with this new body of work, the complex conversation between light, color, and space has further evolved. The positive space is at the forefront as luscious layers of broad brushstrokes drip with determination in a kind of perfect imperfection. Your eyes do a dance with these trance-inducing abstractions and Maya’s love of music is apparent in their sense of rhythm and organic freedom. Maya’s paintings are exuberant celebrations of jubilee, magnetic in their exaltation; its no wonder thousands have taken photos in front of her larger than life murals.

The meaning of the title is two-fold however because the thing is, the work is both light and heavy too. The symmetry in Maya’s compositions keep them grounded and even when the axis is veering off the canvas, they maintain a presence that makes one want to sit and ponder the infinite possibilities of the universe. Beyond the light, there is a darkness too. You simply can’t have one without the other. This dichotomy provides a balance in Maya’s work, just as in life’s universal interdependence.

We invite you to sit with each of these paintings and allow the heaviness to feel light.
Light Heavy is a pop-up exhibition by Cinders Gallery at Mulherin NY.
