Dean Russo
A Brooklyn, New York based artist uses vibrant pop-art colors and bold abstract patterns to find personal connection with his subject matter. The urban landscapes of Brooklyn provided fundamental structure for inspiration for Dean - Painted walls peeling after years of neglect brought to life by murals and graffiti that reflect his art making process over the decade.
Growing up in Brooklyn, New York as an Italian-American artist, he was vulnerable to predisposed judgments on his heritage and culture he grew up with during the 70’s and 80’s. This is the core connection he made with animals.
In the midst of this process, Dean discovered another subject who lacked tonality - himself. It started as giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves… Bully breeds, specifically pit bulls became the subject of his inspiration. But through this advocacy and passion for the unspoken, he found himself in the absence of representation.
Misunderstood is one of the main topics of discourse in his subjects. To expose the joy and vibrancy of each subject despite misconstrued representation from public scrutiny is where Dean finds his personal relation in his body of work.
