Onishi Project presents a selection of artists at Affordable Art Fair New York and a group exhibition “x2” at its Chelsea Gallery. Onishi Project will showcase the work of six artists from various parts of the world, including Japan, the United States, Australia and Norway; their chosen media also ranges widely from paper and paint to photography. The multitude of creative expressions feature striking compositions in color and black-and-white, a series of intriguing contrasts and textured patterns rendered with remarkable skills.

Akira Seo studied at the Brooks Institute of Photography in California, where he immersed himself in surf culture. Fish Out of Water is his collection of black-and-white portraits of surfers from Ventura, California, embracing their passion while outside of their natural environment. Instead of the usual in-action shots showing the surfers paddling out or gliding down the crest of a wave, the artist depicts them on land in carefully constructed poses. An avid surfer himself, Seo spends a lot of time in the ocean with other fellow surfers. His images capture the human connection to each another, to one’s passion and to the style of living that contributes to shaping one’s identity.

Mark Chu is an artist from Melbourne, Australia. He studied at Melbourne Grammar School in Australia, Sciences Po in France, the University of Iowa in the United States, and is currently an MFA candidate at Columbia University in New York. As an adolescent, he recorded and performed as a pianist with national symphony orchestras. He paints using mainly oil color, without any thinning medium to retain the denser relief pure oil provides and the partially uncontrolled swirls from stirring different colors incompletely. He draws his inspiration from fashion photography: the lightning, which often offsets deep contrast in a face and the garments, which are heavier and more form-driven than every-day clothes. Human faces and emotions are highlighted by colors and texture.

Sirenes lives and works outside of Oslo, Norway. As a child, she was fascinated by colors, especially the gradients of blue between the sky and sea. In her work, she attempts to communicate emotions onto canvas. Her method is unique and allows her to feel connected to the natural world. Always barefoot, she uses her fingers to apply colors onto canvas. She also uses other surprising tools such as towels, brushes and brooms. Her works have been exhibited in many countries, including Italy, Spain and Canada.

Suzy Kellems Dominik is a style expert, an authority in luxury and a leading collector of runway fashions. She is dedicated to inspiring women to be fearless and to exercise their own voices. Her first solo exhibition in New York, Bear Attack, featured her first three installations that revealed the power dynamic between beauty and terror. It is the artist’s desire to bring awareness that the potential peril of every day’s existence in a woman’s life is not always apparent, but more often veiled by glamor and beauty. Selected works will be on view at both sites.

Tomoki Kaneko was born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan in 1976. He received his doctorate degree in painting from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts. His paintings often explore one main color and its varying gradients in combination with a pleasing silvery glint from his use of leaf. His works have been exhibited widely in Japan at Art Space Compass, Ginza Surugadai Gallery, Gallery Q and others.

Yoko Takeuchi is a photographer and flower artist. She arranges flowers to provoke sensuality and emotions. The beauty of a flower in full bloom grabs the attention of the beholder and becomes his/her connection to the flower’s leaves, stems and roots. By simply admiring flowers, the viewer allows the energy of the earth to flow through, nourish, and revitalize him/her.
