This event has ended.

Empire of Personal Myths is Fawad Khan’s second solo exhibition with Lu Magnus, featuring a distinctly new body of work. Composed of drawing and large-scale painted panel, the selected works dissect the world of scientific representations in order to narrate personal mind – and dreamscapes.

The term “private mythology” was first used in 1926 by art historian and critic Carl Einstein, to describe the worldview of Paul Klee. In 1956 Ernst Kris first introduced the term “personal myth” within psychotherapeutic literature to describe certain elusive dimensions of the human personality. And Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology, Carl Jung began his autobiography Memories, Dreams, Reflections by telling his own “personal myth”. Over the course of its history, the term oscillates between and weaves together the fields of art, scientific research and storytelling.

Much like this introspective weaving of systematic study and narrative, Fawad Khan’s process of creating Empire of Personal Myths can be described in terms of a Renaissance – where art takes a turn towards looking inside the body and mind, becoming a significant tool in empirical investigation. Working both visually and conceptually, Khan explores the themes of life sciences while undergoing a series of personal meditations on life, mortality and violence.

Repeating the same drawing over and over, he emulates genetic reproduction and mutation, as well as the relationships and hierarchies within nature. In the meticulous drawing of thousands and thousands of pomegranates, the shapes found in the macro and micro scales of astrophysics or molecular science, emerge. By looking into our viscera, Khan seeks to explore the DNA of our mythologies, be it the grand narrative of science – or be it the dreamlike states of personal myths.
