Tria Gallery presents “A Life In Beijing”, the first New York solo exhibit of oils on canvas by Beijing artist Huang Yimin. On display are eight imaginative and enchanting paintings that depict a dream world inhabited by animals, moons, Chinese vases, and fantastical creatures. Each canvas is whimsical, playful, happy and colorful - saturated with vivid greens, blues, golds, oranges, reds, pinks and purples.

A viewer could easily assume that the inspirations of the artist were simple and uncomplicated. However for Huang, “they represent a return to innocence after a lifetime of experience.” The artist’s childhood was far from Utopian. The Communist Revolution and subsequent purges caused intense upheaval in her family. Her father was sent to a labor camp for “re-education” when she and her sister were young girls. To ensure the survival of the family, she, her mother and sister had to sever all ties with the father and he died before they were able to re-establish contact with him.

Huang’s perception of people and politics was forever clouded, and she sought solace and refuge in painting and drawing her own world of nature and fantasy. So, despite the naiveté and seeming innocence of her canvases, there is an underlying subtext of trauma and complexity to them. The paintings are mesmerizing, lively and compelling, and imbued with personal history and meaning. The paintings she describes now as “happy” are tributes to the survival of the human spirit.

Huang Yimin grew up in China and graduated with a B.A. degree in Fine Art from China Capital University. Growing up in Beijing, she chose to make The Forbidden City’s architecture, color and energy, with which was intimately familiar, an integral part of her work. Huang has shown in galleries and garnered glowing reviews all over the world. She has won several prestigious awards and fellowships in the United States, and her paintings have been collected by both the Hong Kong and Singapore Art Museums. Huang currently lives and works with her husband and daughter in New York City.
