Franklin Parrasch Gallery presents Another Culmination…, the inaugural exhibition at our new gallery location: 53 East 64th Street, New York, NY 10065.

In 2002, Ken Price produced a series of small-scale sculptures, each displayed within internally-lit wooden vitrines. One of those works, entitled “Another Culmination of the Whole Thing,” references the relationship of color, scale, and form to perception. As with all of Price’s work, this piece challenges the way in which we process visual information in constant physical and conceptual flux.

Another Culmination… includes works by Sarah Braman, Marcia Hafif, John McCracken, Bruce Nauman, Ken Price, and Daniel Turner, each of whom addresses anti-referential abstraction by transcending the limitations of their material processes. Collectively, they challenge the means by which we absorb and respond to information essential to perception and self-awareness. These artists’ investigations map a trajectory of experimentation with materials and imagery, resulting in works which are not examples of superficial aestheticism or schools of thought but rather are expressions of an individual voyage.

In recent years, each of these artists has been the subject of notable institutional recognition: Braman’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States, recognition for her receipt of the 2013 Maud Morgan Prize, is currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston); the Art Institute of Chicago’s Society for Contemporary Art selected a 1974 “Mass Tone” painting by Hafif as their 2013 acquisition for the Museum’s permanent collection; in 2011, Castello di Rivoli (Turin, Italy) hosted McCracken’s largest career retrospective to date; Nauman was awarded the Golden Lion for his multi-site installation “Topological Gardens” at the 2009 Venice Biennale; Price’s long-awaited career retrospective took place in 2012, traveling from LACMA to the Nasher Sculpture Center (Dallas, TX) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, 2013) and a retrospective of his works on paper was on view at the Drawing Center (New York) during the Metropolitan Museum show – it has since traveled to the Albright Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo, NY) and the Harwood Museum (Taos, NM); and Turner was selected to participate in the 2014 Chinati Foundation residency (Marfa, TX), and a solo show of recent work is currently on view at Objectif Exhibitions, a not-for-profit exhibition space in Antwerp, Belgium.
