This event has ended.

One Trace After investigates a question that traditional, tidy exhibition narratives rarely consider: what can the visitor of a gallery see, experience, or know at any given instant? Rather than suggesting a prescribed or definitive answer, this exhibition instead embraces the fact that a visitor can never fully take in an artwork or a group of artworks in a single viewing. Since an artwork’s characteristics reveal themselves in pieces as they circulate through discourse, emerge in relation to a context, or unfold over an extended duration, visitors can only ever grasp a “trace” of an artwork in one encounter—a moment in the work’s dynamic existence that reflects both its immanent conditions and its immediate surroundings.

To explore this ephemeral quality of the viewing experience, One Trace After brings together works of art that both incorporate such traces and address this concept as central to their form and content. Throughout the exhibition’s run, the artists will draw out the multiplicity of traces that exist in their work, periodically uncovering new or invisible aspects by altering, adapting, or adding to his or her artwork.

Alongside the artworks, the exhibition presents interpretive texts that exploit the format of a press release. However, unlike the standard practice of presenting a single reading of the exhibition, One Trace After will provide four, introducing a new press release each week to reinterpret the exhibition from a different author’s perspective.

As a curatorial experiment, One Trace After prompts visitors to engage with the exhibited artworks and the relationships between them through a set of changing contexts. In addition to inviting visitors to do so by returning to the gallery on multiple occasions, the exhibition offers the blog onetraceafter.tumblr.com as an opportunity to track its progression through a real-time record of its shifting installation, programming, written materials, and visitor responses. Since each moment of One Trace After is fleeting, with every physical or virtual encounter visitors will be able to develop their own unique but equally relevant answer to the exhibition’s central question.
