“Bompas & Parr’s FUNLAND: Pleasures & Perils of the Erotic Fairground” Exhibition

The Museum of Sex

This event has ended.

Bompas & Parr’s FUNLAND: Pleasures & Perils of the Erotic Fairground, created by the renowned London-based conceptual artist duo and commissioned by the Museum of Sex in Manhattan. On June 19th, FUNLAND opens to the public and the exhibition will launch featuring five “carnival attractions” designed to stimulate all the sense in some subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

Amongst the five interactive installation experiences, visitors can jump high in “Jump for Joy” a moonbounce made of giant, over-sized breasts, and lose themselves in “G-Spot Mirror Maze” a mirrored labyrinth that leads patrons by scent on a climactic journey to the Gräfenberg (or “G”) Spot. Collaborating with Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of the National Fairground Archive in the UK, the team explores the historical and cultural references to faiground eroticism by transforming a portion of the gallery into a small cinema titled “Erotic Picture Palace.” Including never-before-seen images, the historic footage gives visitors an opportunity to learn about the underpinnings of this exhibition and how sex, gender and other cultural identities have been negotiated in fairgrounds throughout history. Physical, visual and olfactory experiences will be utilized to give the audience a breathless rush of endorphins (similar to those released at the point of orgasm), challenge their strength and agility, and allow them to compete with and impress friends, lovers, and other patrons.

Named by The Independent as ‘one of the 15 people who will define the future of arts in Britain’ – Sam Bompas and Harry Parr design spectacular sensory experiences on an architectural scale (V&A Museum, SFMoMA, Disney), most recently The Multisensory Fireworks for London’s New Year’s Eve celebration. FUNLAND is their debut installation at the Museum of Sex and marks the beginning of MoSEX’s commission program initiative.
