frosch&portmann presents THIS MUCH, the first solo exhibition by New York and Washington D.C. based artist David Hayward.

David Hayward’s oeuvre is the result of a constant reworking process; some of the paintings sit for a while before the artist revisits the surface and - neglecting or approving initial ideas - considers the work finished.
Hayward’s small-scale paintings are drawn from an intuitive process in which he invents, borrows, and discovers what resonates with him.

The single forms that dominate the artist’s vocabulary evoke the elegant simplicity of archetypes such as the shape of a heavy waterdrop or the irregular outline of cells. Depicted in isolation, the forms allow for a more direct relationship or study, whereas multiple structures whould be about the interaction between the shapes themselves. The pursuit to understand the visual workings of this single form is what is most intriguing and rewarding about David Hayward’s paintings.
