“Rubberneck”
Curiosity generated through someone else’s trouble is an urge extremely difficult to dodge. It is undeniably crass and horrible to seek entertainment by witnessing situations of accidents and oddities, yet this voyeuristic tendency is human nature. It could be our weakness, for a lack of compassion for the victims, or strength to be able to seek humor and hope in states of despair. “Rubberneck” is a show of works that explore the inspirational contents generated in awkward situations and benign disasters.

Caroline Larsen is a young painter from Toronto. Her “Car Fire” series captures the very essence of the “Rubberneck” experience.
Using an original technique, Larsen layers her paint to achieve a woven fabric like texture, which also resemble an 8-bit pixel graphic of retro video games. Juxtaposing horrific images of cars engulfed in flames with her colorful tapestry aesthetics, viewers are confronted with a virtual experienced of passing by a disastrous wreck.

Kenjiro Kitade is a sculptor specializing in ceramics. For this presentation, Kitade has several sculptures that depict some form of genetic deformity in humans. Heads of these figures are bloated into tumor like growths that suggests a morbid disease, yet each figure never suggests “pain” or any other negative emotions. Conversely the poses suggest a happy childish demeanor and playfulness that twists this awful tragedy into a strange blend of curiosity and comfort.

David Livingston will be presenting a series of performance based videos where he appears in various locations in the city with a brightly pink giant mock penis. Livingston places himself in this awkward prop and acts as if nothing is wrong. Pedestrians and on-lookers stare at him in attempt to decipher his strange act never being able to fully understand what his stunt is about. “Big Dick In The City” captures the “rubberneck” moment of the odd and mildly uncomfortable through random public encounters.
